Our story

It was 2016 when Laurel and Grey founder Katy Rutkin started to experience burnout in her senior-level role at a global marketing agency. Not only that, but she observed similar sentiments among colleagues and junior staff. Morale was low, and mistakes were being made quite frequently. She knew she wasn’t alone; agency roles notoriously come with long hours and the culture can be detrimental to the mental health of employees. She thought to herself, “there must be a better way” and decided to build a business that would improve upon the existing agency model. She sought to create an environment where mental health is prioritized, and people feel valued and supported and have the opportunity to learn, grow, and do work they felt really proud of. She truly feels it makes all the difference for the clients Laurel and Grey serves.

Meet the team

Katy Rutkin, Founder

After graduating from Michigan State University, Katy traded the snow for sunshine and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in marketing.

Since then, she's had the opportunity to work as a digital strategist across industries and verticals, from retail to automotive to entertainment. She helped Vans launch an expansive campaign to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic brand. The World Cup campaign she helped execute on behalf of Volkswagen was on the shortlist for a Cannes Lion.

Katy founded Laurel and Grey in 2017 with the goal of helping boutique brands and individuals leverage digital marketing to achieve business goals. She is passionate about using the digital landscape to tell a consistent brand story and forge meaningful connections with consumers that ultimately inspire action.
